Community Orchard – exhibition of watercolours by Graham Burnett 10 – 17 May 2008

Transition Town Westcliff’s first foray into the world of the arts is in partnership with the Westcliff Art Trail, Scarlett Fireplaces and Spiralseed, presenting a series of watercolours based on the rather wonderful but little known traditional orchard in Eastwoodbury Lane. Ten paintings by Graham Burnett will be displayed in Jay and Mel Scarlett’s showroom at 164 London Road between the 10th to 17th of May as part of Westcliff’s first art trail, which, we hope, will raise awareness of the region’s rich food growing tradition as well as inspiring us to consider resilience and food security in the post-oil age…

Press release;

“In orchards, we and nature together have created an exuberant and a secret landscape – a treasury of genetic diversity and a repository of culture. They are a wise way of sharing the land – a positive gift to those who follow.”

– The Common Ground Community Orchards Handbook

These paintings have been inspired by, and are interpretations of, St Lawrences’ orchard in Eastwoodbury Lane.

Originally planted during the 1920’s, and neglected for many years, this orchard is currently being restored and revitalised by Growing Together, a local project promoting horticulture and health.

St Lawrences’ orchard is a reminder of more resilient times for the Southend area, a tiny fragment left over from a time when much of the land surrounding the town was covered by acres and acres of orchards and small holdings, before we became totally reliant upon supermarkets, imported food and fossil fuels to feed ourselves.

The partnership of Scarlett Fireplaces, Spiralseed and Transition Town Westcliff hope that you will be inspired to once again rediscover this sense of self-reliance and community sustainability.
